PETALING JAYA (Jan 27, 2014): Lawyer Lee Chin Cheh (pix) today tendered his resignation as the state assemblyman for Kajang, paving the way for a third by-election to be held since the 13th general election in May last year.
The resignation was confirmed by Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh, who said that Lee did not give a reason for his resignation and that the Election Commission (EC) would be informed today that the seat was vacated.
“Yes, (he) resigned today; I will inform the EC tomorrow,” Yeoh said in a text message to theSun.
“No reason (was) stated in the letter; according to (clause 68) of the state constitution, assemblymen can tender resignation (without specifying reasons).”
The last two by-elections were for the Kuala Besut state seat in Terengganu in July last year, which was retained by the Barisan Nasional and the Sungai Limau state seat in Kedah last November which was retained by PAS.
Speculation is rife that Lee, 42, vacated the seat for Pakatan Rakyat de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest and eventually replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor mentri besar.
It could also be an extension of the long-standing feud between Khalid and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.
